Jackson Urges Mayor & Council: Hold Off on New City Manager Hiring Process

The Rockville City Manager resigned on Thursday, August 17, effective at 5:00 pm.

This comes after a closed session of the Mayor and City Council.

In the interest of the City and its residents, Rockville should not undertake any candidate search or subsequent candidate interview process for a new City Manager but instead wait until a newly elected Mayor and Council are seated.

Rockville is in the midst of an election for Mayor and all six City Council seats. It should be up to a new Mayor and City Council to decide upon City Manager candidates – one whom they will hire to work for the City of Rockville for the foreseeable future.

We need to have the newly elected Mayor and City Council hire a City Manager through a transparent and thorough process. Rockville needs to have a City Manager who has the full confidence of the new Mayor and City Council and of all Rockville’s residents. We can only do this with a process begun after the election of a new Mayor and City Council.

I respectfully request the current Rockville Mayor and Council announce Barack Matite will remain Interim City Manager through the November 7th Rockville election and no new City Manager Search will begin until the new Mayor and Council is elected and seated.

I look forward to being on the City Council and working with my colleagues and the new Mayor to hire the best person to move Rockville forward and bring about a brighter future for all residents of Rockville.
